hundreds of metal buttons ornament this private villa in indonesia

Architectural studio Rdma Designs built the ‘Ton’ villas, a complex of wooden guesthouses in Lembang, Indonesia. Consisting of four guest houses and two spacious meeting halls overlooking a giant fishpond, the Ton Villas were designed for entertaining large groups of people. The 3,500 sqm property also features a large dining area and a lounge where guests can engage in amusing activities. The various buildings on the site are connected by a series of corridors and footpaths, which also helps to cool the area during a harsh sunny day while minimizing the use of air conditioning. To further help with the air circulation, wooden vertical slats and perforated concrete blocks are strategically placed creating captivating silhouettes and shadows.

Wood was chosen as the primary material for the project, because of its functionality and the warm feel that it offers. Huge lumbers and tall trees contribute to the inviting atmosphere and the decoration of the site. Wood's materiality is accented by the use of stone walls, concrete blocks, metal railings, and steel structures. The volumes of the buildings differ, giving visitors diverse architectural and spatial experiences at various corners of the complex. The team scattered unique design details all over the villa. Inside the main building, the ceiling is covered by panels adorned with hundreds of discarded denim metal buttons, weighing over two tons. Meanwhile, the main building's floor is covered with tiles printed with a custom motif using a silk screen printing technique.
